Natalia, check …
Natalia, check Michael Spiro’s explanation of this. The opening (lead-in) open tone is a preparatory note, just like a conductor lifting his baton for the downbeat. In his view, this is a more natural (more cuban) phrasing than starting rigidly on the downbeat. Instead, start half a beat before the One.
Hope that helps.

@nataliasandaliab …
@nataliasandaliab if i may….becouse when you count the times in a band the 1&3 are beats of the big drum and 2&4 are beats of the premier drum and you have 2 enter with the louder sound in 1&3 and Open tone IS a louder tone, the hand+fingers are more silent tones….Anyway, that what i think about starting with an open at count to 1.

There’s one thing I …
There’s one thing I don’t understand. if we count the rhythm in eighths, it would be Hand Fingers Slap Fingers, Hand Fingers Slap Open, right? Then why, when you start playing, after you count 1-2-3-4 instead of starting with Hand Fingers, you start with an Open hit with your right hand? I think you then go back to Fingers, as in, you begin Open Fingers Open Fingers, instead of Hand Fingers Open Fingers?? Is it just a way to begin it? I hope you understand what I’m saying… Thanks!

Hey nate. I have to …
Hey nate. I have to congas, a 10″ and 11″ inch. My smaller one sounds good but i de-tuned my larger one because i heard it was good to do this when not playing it. Now whenever i try to tune it and it starts getting tight i get metallic overtones which sound horrible but it still doesnt seem to be tight enough.. How tight can i make it? Is there any chance of the skin ripping?
Thanks for your help man and keep up the great videos.
