I am a gal. Im going to my first salsa lessons today. I have no clue what Im wearing. no clue what to expect. but this is something ive always wanted to do. im NOT brining a partner. you think id be able to meet new people there?

Good for You!

First of all Relax… the vast majority of salsa dancers are very friendly and sociable. If you are sociable,you will make new friends very quickly.

Salsa dancing is not too difficult to learn, and you could be dancing the basics after your first lessons. Also you don’t need a partner as partners are rotated throughout the lesson and you dance with whoever you want after the lessons are finished.

OK, shoes…

You will be doing quite a bit of turning, so shoes are very important.

Ideally they will have a leather sole, a solid back and a strap across your ankle to hold the shoes securely on your feet. The heal height is not so important, but you should feel comfortable and balanced.

No sandals or trainers.

If you get into it you can buy reasonable quality dance shoes or even dance trainers nowadays for £30 to £50.

I want to start taking salsa lessons for me and my wife. We live in the southwest suburbs and would prefer to go somewhere closer than Chicago. I heard of the Willowbrook Ballroom and looked it up but they have salsa lessons on Wednesdays…the day she gets off of work late. (figures)

In Downers Grove, on 63rd Street just about a quarter of a mile east of I 355 is Celebrity Dance Studio. They do private ( just you and an instructor ) and group lessons. Call them at 630.969.2800 It’s located in a big strip mall, set back from 63rd street.

I speak from personal experience they have very talented dance instructors. My wife and I won some initial free lessons, and then kept going. We had no dance experience just had an idea it might be neat to try. Now we know the basics of Foxtrot, Tango, Rumba, Waltz, Swing, and Salsa.

We go in the evenings, once a week—it really is better if you can go more often as you will pick up the steps quicker, we just never could do that–

Several times after a long day you’ll remember you have a dance lesson and say to yourself I don’t want to go I’m too tired, but once you get there you get perked up…..and once you begin to pick up on the steps it boosts your dance confidence.

I know they have an intro rate of $20 for a lesson, I’ve seen it advertized in the Metro section of the Chicago Tribune, as well as at the studio. By having a private lesson you can go at a time that is convenient for you and learn any dance you want. I think group lessons may be more on a set time basis as you found out at the Willowbrook Ballroom.
